West Virginia Capitol Building

In 1877, after much debate, Charleston was chosen as the final site for the state capital. Eight years later, the first capitol building was opened, only to burn down in 1921. A subsequent replacement also burned down. A Capitol Building Commission authorized the construction of the current capitol building. It was dedicated on June 20th, 1932.

West Virginia Capitol Building

The West Virginia Capitol Building is the product of a prominent architect by the name of Cass Gilbert. He designed the limestone structure, and after three arduous stages of construction, Governor William G. Conley dedicated the building on June 20, 1932. Gilbert went on to design the Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C. and eventually became the president of the American Institute of Architects.
